CineAsia: 5 Things Not to Miss

The Hong Kong-based exhibition convention offers regional players a glimpse at Hollywood blockbusters, cutting-edge technology (4D, anyone?) and the latest strategies for combating piracy.

The iconic Hong Kong skyline has become the shooting backdrop of choice for Hollywood tentpoles, including Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, Michael Mann’s Cyber and Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction. From Dec. 10 to 12, exhibitors from throughout the region and top brass from the major studios will admire that cityscape from the annual CineAsia convention, a platform for theater owners and global film distribution executives to talk shop about the latest developments. The event offers a wealth of seminars, special presentations and screenings. Here’s what’s on the agenda:

Beijing’s Tongzhou District goes 5D

If planners get their way, Tongzhou District will soon be home to a large movie-entertainment center, according to a report in Friday’s Beijing Morning Post. The center, named 5D Show, will include a large cinema, a live performance venue and a shopping mall. According to the blueprint released by local government, the giant cinema is shaped like a Peking Opera mask. “We hope to get some help from several successful models in the US. I think it will be the future of Chinese cultural industry, experience and entertainment consumption,” said Sun Jianjun from the investment company.

Beijing To Build First 3D Technology Park

Looking to encourage more interactive films and online games companies, Beijing is reportedly planning the city’s first 3D technology park in Changping district and the feasibility report will be launched before the end of this year.

According to the Science and Technology Commission of Changping, the new technology park will include functional areas for 3D technology research and development; manufacturing of high-end 3D products; check and verification of 3D products; 3D medical imaging services; an 3D international conventions and exhibitions. It will also have a 3D international research and development central area, a 3D international enterprise park, and a 3D international themed park.

Fang Yan, deputy director for Changping district, said that the district has made major plans for its high-tech industry in the next few years. It will work together with China Video Industry Association and China 3D Industry Association for the construction of a high-end development and manufacturing base for 3D products.

At present, some 3D-related enterprises, including Barco from Belgium, have already settled in Changping.
