SIGGRAPH Asia 2013, Hong Kong

The 6th ACM SIGGRAPH Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques in Asia will take place from 19 – 22 November in Hong Kong at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

SIGGRAPH Asia 2013 is expected to draw more than 7,000 professionals from 52 countries to Hong Kong.

Animation more than a fantasy
Beijing, October 5th (China Daily)

Creative approaches needed in artistry and business as animators face bottlenecks in traditional broadcast media, Eric Jou reports.

The names of Chinese animation studios have long been showing up in the credits of foreign products. That might please those mentioned, but creating quality content for domestic audiences has been incredibly hard with so many animation companies engaged in outsourcing. But a change is on the way as more and more domestic animation houses use their skill to produce the content they conceive. In early September, the People’s Daily said more Chinese viewers are tuning in to watch domestic animations because the quality is getting better. It also stressed the need to create original content.

According to the China International Cartoon Network website, revenues from domestic animation will hit $32 billion by 2015.

Bona Film Group to Open 3D Production Base in Tianjin
Tianjin, May 10th (Screen Daily)

Bona has signed with the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city to set up an operation centre in its “National Animation Industry Compound”. Tracks In The Snowy Forest will be directed by Tsui, while The White-Hair Witch will be produced by Tsui and Huang Jianxin and directed by Jacob Cheung.

“We plan to produce two to three 3D films in 2012,” said Bona CEO Yu Dong, speaking in Tianjin, a city 110 km southwest of Beijing. Tsui’s 3D Flying Swords Of Dragon Gate, produced by Bona, grossed $71m (RMB450m) in China in 2011.

3D Expo Seeks to Explain New Technology to China

Following the eye-popping success of Avatar in China and the recent flop of China’s latest homegrown 3D film, Don Quixote, Ellen Eliasoph, the former head of Warner Bros. China and Bai Qiang, the founder of a new company called 3D-China, have teamed up to explain and promote the technology shaking Hollywood to the China’s burgeoning film industry and the growing masses of Chinese middle-class moviegoers.

Beijing To Build First 3D Technology Park
Beijing, July 8th 2010 (China Tech News)

Looking to encourage more interactive films and online games companies, Beijing is reportedly planning the city’s first 3D technology park in Changping district and the feasibility report will be launched before the end of this year.

According to the Science and Technology Commission of Changping, the new technology park will include functional areas for 3D technology research and development; manufacturing of high-end 3D products; check and verification of 3D products; 3D medical imaging services; an 3D international conventions and exhibitions. It will also have a 3D international research and development central area, a 3D international enterprise park, and a 3D international themed park.

Fang Yan, deputy director for Changping district, said that the district has made major plans for its high-tech industry in the next few years. It will work together with China Video Industry Association and China 3D Industry Association for the construction of a high-end development and manufacturing base for 3D products.

At present, some 3D-related enterprises, including Barco from Belgium, have already settled in Changping.
